Windsurfing

As you might expect from somewhere with as much coastline as Sussex, windsurfing is a very popular pastime for both visitors and local residents. You can enjoy this exciting sport at a number of locations along the Sussex coast.

Windsurfing is one of the most exciting and challenging sports around today, and it doesn't cost a fortune to get into it. You can start by renting equipment to see if the sport is really for you. If you're bitten by the bug, then you can start to invest in some basic gear. It's important to get yourself some professional tuition so that you can really enjoy the experience without compromising your safety. There are standard courses available, such as the RYA certification scheme, which will cover the basics and get you to a point where you can navigate a simple course.

For location, the Chichester area with its huge natural harbour is hard to beat. Being relatively sheltered, learning to windsurf here is fun and challenging, without being too intimidating. Nearby, West Wittering is located right at the mouth of the harbour, and has one of the most active windsurfing clubs on the south coast. There is a good support infrastructure in the area in terms of equipment supply and hire shops, and tuition is available through the West Wittering Windsurfing Club itself.

Pevensey Bay is another popular Sussex windsurfing destination, although perhaps not ideal for the novice.

Sussex windsurfing is not just confined to the coast. Inland there are centres such as Southwater Watersports Centre at Southwater Country Park near Horsham. Because this is based around a lake, it makes an ideal environment to quite literally put a toe in the water and start to learn this very exciting sport in a safe environment. Chichester too has a very large lake with a very active watersports industry.
